PLANO ASG VISITS Texas Fashion Collection at University of North Texas

By Debby Bowles

Tuesday, June 28, 2025. the Plano ASG Chapter had the unique opportunity to visit the Westheimer Gallery of the Texas Fashion Collection at University of North Texas.  What an amazing opportunity.

The Texas Fashion Collection, housing fashion of top designers works, has over 18,000 items in their collection.  After a brief overview of the collection, its history, and how to access via online its collection, the curator shared details of several garments that make their fashions unique.  A Miyake garment had an impressive back panel as well as interesting pockets.  A 1960s era Hanae Mori dress showed the couture details used in today’s fashions such as a double collar and an inverted back pleat from the waistline. We learned how simple Christian Dior seams were completed before the emergence of the serger.  And, how two zippers were installed on a gown one on top of the other for easier dressing.

While all these details were fascinating, we wondered which garments we’ve made will make it into the archives.  We have so many expert seamstresses in our midst.

Special Note:  The Collection has developed a section for personal made garments.  Yes, we can donate to them!!
