Needle Nuts Embellished Sweatshirt

Hi Needle Nuts,

We are embarking on our Embellished Sweatshirt project next Monday, Feb. 18th.
Whether you will be making a jacket, vest, or material for a tote, purse or pillow; this will be the first of 3 classes for the project. Below is the agenda for each class and homework assignments:

Feb. 18 Class 1 – The Plan

We will begin to plan the garment or item, placement of design and transfer design to sweatshirt/fabric.

We will test fibers on the materials you bring to make sure the embellishment materials work with the fabric materials.
Ideally 100% cotton sweatshirt fleece is the most desired material for the base of this project, however, an 80/20% blend will also work. Any fibers below a 60 cotton and 40 poly blend will be a little harder to work with and might not get the results you desire. If you haven’t acquired your sweatshirts or material by Monday, we can work on your pattern, design elements and color choices for your project.

Bring:

  • sweatshirts or fabric ( pre-wash garments or fabric )
  • pattern or plan for garment or item you are making
  • basic sewing kit ( scissors, needle, thread, tape measure etc )
  • embellishment design ( this could be a photo, pattern, quilt stencil, embroidery transfer, magazine picture etc )
  • felting hand tools and/or machine, and a sample of the roving, fibers, threads etc that you will use for your design.

Homework:
Finalize pattern, design placement and transfer design to fabric. Acquire fibers, roving, threads etc for class 2.

March 18 Class 2 – The Needle Felting

We will be needle felting the embellishment designs onto the sweatshirt fabric.

Bring:

  • basic sewing kit ( scissors, needle, thread, tape measure etc. )
  • felting hand tools and/or machine
  • roving, fibers, threads etc. for design embellishment

Homework:
Complete needle felting design and construct your item. Collect finishing embellishments for class 3.

April 15 Class 3 – The Finishing Touch

We will evaluate fit and design of our projects, add any further embellishments and
work on finishing details, ( add embroidery, beading, labels or tags, or add collar/cuffs
pockets etc )

Bring:

  • beads, buttons, ribbons, trinkets, materials for a label
  • basic sewing kit ( scissors, needle, thread, tape measure etc. )
  • felting hand tools and/or machine
  • roving, fibers, threads etc. for design embellishment

Thanks for reading all the way through this agenda. Of course, the agenda may change as we progress
with this project. Also on Monday, we will poll the group about the ASG Fashion Show and Fall
Special Event timing.
